Michigan Car Insurance
What does my Michigan auto insurance cover?
Always refer to your own insurance plan first for details of what it covers. Michigan motorists are required to have personal injury protection, property damage insurance, and residual liability insurance. Personal injury protection covers your own injuries that result from the accident, as well as lost wages, rehabilitative care, and some in-home services. With personal injury protection, your insurance company is required to pay for your medical costs resulting from the accident for the rest of your life, if the injury requires. Property damage insurance covers damage
to public property as well as damage to the other motorist’s vehicle if you were at-fault in the accident. Insurance companies are allowed to include a $300.00 per accident deductible in your personal injury protection plan.
If you have more than one insurer, you may encounter disputes as to which insurer is required to pay which claims. Also, if the owner of the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident are different people, there may also arise a dispute to which person’s insurer is required to pay benefits. In the case of a dispute, you should contact the Assigned Claims Facility of Michigan. The Assigned Claims Facility can also assist a passenger or person outside of motor vehicle who was injured in a car accident who does not have insurance to cover their injuries. In this case, the Assigned Claims Facility will assign your claim to an insurer. You may also opt to purchase uninsured motorist coverage or under insured motorist coverage to cover costs in the case that the at-fault driver does not have adequate property damage or liability coverage.
